O/T, I know.

What do you guys and gals think of the Mustang? Does it float your boat? Could you see yourself in one instead of a Monaro?

Personally, I love 'em. Not as powerful as the Monaro, I think the 4.6 litre V8 pumps out around 300bhp, but there's loads that can be done to up that. LHD could be a hindrence, but this little beauty is on Autotrader for less than £25k. Loads to choose from too.

I really like the "Eleanor" colour scheme and American Racing style wheels on this one.

I dont know why...just doesnt float my boat. Wheels look out of proportion, just doesnt look quite right. Cant put my finger on it. Colour is nice though.

Really like them and was on my short list when I bought the Moaner.

Only the l/h drive perseuaded me otherwise.
Have had Yanks before and whilst l/h is ok-ish, it can really be a pain in the arse.

Would consider one for my next car.

I should imagine it's got a very similar character to the Monaro. Pity they never officially imported it in RHD, 'cos that'd make the choice a lot harder.

It's also got the 'ol cart sprung rear axle....although so has my old Capri, and that just adds to the fun factor

I think, when the money's in my pocket, I'll take one out for a test drive. Although I'm sure the Monaro will still be No.1 choice.

Have had a couple of live axle Septics and tbh you wouldn't really notice the difference on the road in most driving conditions.
Ditto leaf springs (has the Mustang? Didn't know it had)

There's a place that does sell them in RHD in this country.....but I think I'd want an "official" conversion. Wouldn't want the steering wheel to come off in my hands eek

Seems a lot of American car fans like the LHD, and think RHD loses a little "character". I just know I'd end up trying to change gear using the door handle for the first 6 months

Even the Corvette Z06 uses leaf springs, albeit carbon fibre ones. And having seen Tiff tearing around a track and holding a glorious powerslide, I'd suggest a well set system can be just as good as a poor IRS setup.

They can be caught out by mid corner bumps though. Just keeps you on your toes

Oh, and the Z06 is about £60k.....a bit more than a Mustang GT

Aye, the lhd bit is quite fun sometimes and a Yank in rhd wouldn't be...right somehow.

The Mustang has lots of road presence and is a fair bit bigger than the
onaro, itself a decent size car.

Oh now stop this...I want a Roush one now

Not a Roushe, but I like this one. It's got the fastback inspired covered side window and the vent in front of the rear wheel lick

The Mustang doesn't use leaf springs. Yes it has a live axle but it's located properly (3 links plus panhard rod) and uses normal coil springs - it's not great but it's way better than cart springs
The Corvette uses transverse leaf springs in lieu of coils but the wheels are still located by full independant double wishbones all-round. The springing medium is largely unimportant, the 911 used to use torsion bars for example (which is basically just an unfirled coil spring) it's wheel location and geometry that matters. I believe the corvette's composite springs reduce unsprung weight too.

Back on topic... yes I love the Mustang but decided a Monaro was a better ownership proposition as it's an official UK car, RHD and arguably has better handling. I decided against the C5 'vette because of the LHD thing too.

MG Rover made a rear wheel drive Mustang V8 engined ZT........the ZT 260 and ZTT 260 Estate. Best kept secret in the UK thanks to their inept marketing. Crisper handling than a Monaro, AP brakes as standard, 5 speed Tremec box instead of 6 speed, Aussie trick rear diff, easily tweaked to 350+ BHP plus loads of tuning parts. Think 'UK made Holden HSV'. Was about same same price as Monaro CV8, now very affordable and surely a good investment. I have one and love it (almost) as much as my HSVs!
