TPM (Porsche tyre pressure monitor)
Discussion
Specced this on the GT3 RS today, as i thought it would be a fab idea for track days
to have real time tyre pressure readings.
However, i have just been told that it can tend to go off a bit when going over bumps etc, and
generally be a bit too sensitive...
Has anyone got it already, and have 1st hand experience of it ???
Thanks
Glenn.

Can you tell it what pressures you want to run, or will it generate alerts if you run trackday tyres at 32 psi etc?
My OPC demonstrated it to me on a 997TT. It seems that, unless you run the fatory recommended pressures, it will detect a fault and the warning indicator will light up indicating the offending wheel(s).

No, it tells you real time what the pressures are at, won't inflate/ deflate them.

In current Formula One cars the engineers can reduce tyre pressure remotely during the race.

I don't think they can flemke - pits to car communication (other than the radio) is currently banned hence why you see teams radioing drivers to tell them to adjust fuel maps etc. I would imaging that such data is sent back to the pits though.
Last year with the single tyre rules they did have some nifty equipment/valves to allow them to change pressure up and down quickly during pit stops.
System works fine on road/track for me - (but on road wheels/tyres)
When you set up the system you tell it the tyre size and whether the vehicle is partially or fully loaded, and it then determines what the ideal pressures should be - I don't believe that on the standard system you can put in your own presets. Maybe they'll change that for the likes of GT3, but somehow I doubt it.

It's a very obvious fitting on the wheel, so whatever it does, all the other teams as well as the FIA will be aware of it.

Yeah I didn't think it was that clever (although humvees have inflation I think). My question was more about whether it would start flashing up warnings on track etc when you are running the correct tyre pressures for track usage which are well out from road pressures. Pretty annoying if a light comes on because you are running 32 hot all round! Sounds like this might be the case from other responses.

I'd be surprised - did it look like this?
If so its simply a TPMS sensor...

I've also heard this to be possible, but don't know if the engineer operates the system or requests the driver to do so.
Did you know that drivers can also increase the tyre pressure during the race, using a small tube located toward the bottom of the helmet.
I'll be off now...

No, it was a cylinder sitting on the inside of the rim, parallel to the axle.++++++++++

Interesting... not something I have seen before! Anyway, I'll stop taking the thread off topic now!
