205 gti - petrol?

Hello All,

On my second 205 gti now and love these cars. Quick question for you guys, recently my car has started smelling of petrol! Bit worrying frankly!

Had a look in the engine bay for any leaks, tried to identify fuel lines etc but I'm no mechanic! Obviously I realise any number of faults could cause this but was wondering if there are any classic causes/sollutions?

Any suggestions much appreciated. Car is a standard 1.9 J reg.

I had the same problem which is apparently quite common. In my case it was the fuel filter (silver cannister at back of engine bay, drivers side) which is a pain in the arse to replace yourself if you haven't done it before.

Before doing this though, are you certain the smell is from the front of the car?

Cheers for the reply. Yeah pretty sure its from the front of the car. First noticed it sitting in traffic with the windows down, and its a bit stronger in the engine bay. I'm being pedantic but like things spot on!

Will have a look into fuel filters and see how brave I'm feeling whether I change it myself or not!

I don't think you're being pedantic. It's not unheard of for 205s to head off to the great carpark in the sky in blaze of glory.
