Hi all!
I'm not a computer genius (or even particularly computer literate!) so I'm looking for (hopefully) a simple solution.
My laptop is just under 18 months old and one of the speakers had been working intermittently for a while. Until recently. Now I have no sound at all, either from CDs, mp3s, or anything I've downloaded. I usually keep the sound turned down until I want to listen to something (can't stand the hello and goodbye notes!) so I can't say exactly when it stopped working, although just over a week ago I do know that the sound was still working. The problem isn't with the actual playing of the media, just with it coming through the speakers.
There's also the sound of something which sounds like it's become loose inside the laptop - sounds a bit like a small stone rattling around in there.
Does anyone have any reasonably simple DIY repair ideas (I have a friend who could probably put some bits into it for me if necessary), or should I take it to a repair place? Or, I suppose option 3 is to buy a new laptop, although I'd rather avoid the expense if possible (saving up for a new house, see).
Thanks to anyone who may be able to help!

It a computer repair shop job I am afraid. Getting laptop cases apart is a hazzard when you know what you are doing let alone for a novice. By the way though if you dont like the turn on and off noise you can go to start/control panel/ sounds and audio devices, click on the sounds tab and either turn them off or change them to something more interesting.

'small stone rattling'? Sounds ominous. Hopefully it's just something daft like an obviously placed capacitor has fallen off. It is however a repair shop or 'super techy' job to crap a laptop and breakout a soldering iron I'm affraid.
Oops, don't think he has a soldering iron (or even knows where to get one from!) so I don't think I'll trouble him with this! Will see what kind of ridiculous quotes I get from repair shops!
