Ok people question thats been bantered around at work,

A certain car manufacturer in the north east is using speed cameras to monitor employee speeds on site. speeds are clearly marked and known.. the company is using the cameras to discipline employees who break the speed limit even to the point of dismissal if persistent..

my question is this -

a. can a private company use speed cameras on people / employees legally

b. and also the cameras themselves - isnt the use of cameras requiring them to be calibrated acurately in order to be true? is it just the police that have that access to calibration?

this is a topic of much debate at work and peoples opinions are varied - obviously dont break the companies speed limit but thats not the question.

I would appreciate any info if anyone could

A company can monitor employees on camera. I think they have to inform them that this is being done.

Calibration can easily be done by the manufacturer of the cameras.

It does seem a bit draconian to go this route though. Any idea why they are doing it? Easy way to sack people? Had many accidents there?

Surely all employees should be demanding training to cope with the new job requirements.

These are used in airports all the time to monitor air-side traffic speeds. Like your employer, if you are caught more than a few times, it is an actionable offence that can lead to dismissal and removal of air-side working permission or worse.

Provided the operators are trained on how to avoid slip then it doesn't strike me as particularly bad. The example of it being used air side at airports I would have thought led to huge amounts of error due to the distance of the camera from the line of travel, after all if you're in the middle of an airport and you can't spot someone standing there pointing a gun you must be blind

yes They'll be the ones standing all alone in the middle of a circle of 100 police marksmen pointing guns back at them.

Security chap* at ICI Wilton used to use a camera to catch people speeding on site, many people were banned from taking cars onto the site as a result (and yes, they could sack people for it).

Logic was that there were many dangerous chemicals and speeding with all the containers about was bloody dangerous.

Sadly they also had the speed signs with the flashing numbers on...never managed more than 68 in a 15mph limit though. ;0)

*And you think the Talivans are bad...this guy would get you from a grassy knoll miles in the distance.
