Hot wires vs. Flappers...

Hello everyone,
Just a quick note to firstly say a big "Thank You" to all the kind messages ref my 400/450SE wanted topic. Some very interesting leads have come from this and some really lovely cars on offer... We are hoping to view several this weekend.
Does anyone have a view as to whether the earlier "flappers" are inferior/superior in any way to the later "hot wired" cars... The only difference I can think of is that the flappers are aurally a lot more exciting aurally ie woofles/pops/bangs on the overrun but I have been told that the later hot wired cars are better at keeping cool in traffic.
Any thoughts?

Well i would of course be totally biast in saying that only really cool people have flappers....!

Seriously though, the popping and banging is just so utterly entertaining and makes the car sound just as good when slowing down as the noise it made accellerating!
Ive had absolutely no problems with my wedge overheating in traffic...even in the sweltering heat of lemans this year, i crawled in traffic for about two hours and shes fine.

My old 350iFHC was a flapper, and managed to get 28mpg on a 2,000 mile round trip to sweden, including a lot of autobahn fun. By comparison, my 280i barely managed to get 20mpg on a good day. Hotwires have ever so slightly more scope for tuning, as the flapper is essentially mapped by the transfer function of the air flow meter, and the hotwire has slightly higher flow rate injectors, and can be remapped by two or three people in the UK.
The 390SE I have has a modified flapper, and presumably the fuel pressure was changed at the factory - to what I don't know, but she won't idle if the pressure is over 2.5Bar. She does sound fantastic on coast down, I will try to emulate the coast down fueling when I install my megasquirt ECU in the near future.
