I have managed to get Vista RC1 installed into VMWare by adding the lines

svga.maxWidth = "800"
svga.maxHeight = "600"

to the .vmx file of the image. However if i remove these lines the image wont boot have also tried changing them to 800 x 600 and 1024 x 768 but the image wont boot unless its set to 640 x 480 (which looks rubbish and is quite hard to use) anyone know of a way round this?

thanks

Can't help from a VMware point of view, but if you have no joy then Virtual PC 2004 runs all the versions of Vista I've tried so far just fine.

Downloaded Virtual PC (as it was free from MS rude not to) but cant get it to install at all in Virtual PC.

It boots from the CD ok but after putting in the serial number it comes up with an error cant find a file in drive D: but my CD ROM is E: why after loading the files from the E: Drive does it try and find some files on thr D: drive??

Not much help I know, but I'm running Vista RC1 in VMWare with no problems at all, and I don't have those lines in the .vmx file.

What version of VMWare is it? I'm on VMWare Server 1.0.1 build 29996, running on Windows 2003 Standard SP1.

I've always installed mine from disc images downloaded from MSDN rather than real CDs or DVDs and never had any problems like this.

What hard drives setup do you have, any second partition?

PS. Are you running VPC 2004 SP1 BTW?

I have it (RC1) running in Workstation 4.5 with no problems, didn't need to add anything like that.

It apparently works ok in VMWare Server i'm using workstation 5.5

I downloaded virtual PC 2004 sp1 so thats the latest version. Have 1 hard drive in 2 partitions.

Just found there is a slightly newer release of RC1 (build 5728) so i'm downloading that see if that works any better.

thanks for the replies

I wonder if that might be confusing the installer, if it initially sees the drive, then loses it and thinks the CD-ROM is on D:

What format are the two partitions?

Has anyone tried RC1 onwards on a relatively low spec PC? I'm thinking 2-2.26Ghz and 512-1GB. How does it run in comparison to XP, obviously without the aero visuals.
