Just called in to Halfords to price Mobil One and got a shock.

Not bought any for a while - £45.99 for 4 ltrs !

Used it in my toys for years but I'm beginning to wonder if it's really worth it.

What's the best price around at the moment ?

Colin.

Your best bet is to speak to Oilman

He's registered on just about every car forum there is and really knows his stuff. He works for Opie oils: www.opieoils.co.uk/ and they will sell you the right amount of oil for a really good price. Extremelyy knowledgable about the various types - synthetic non synthetic, viscosities etc. There's probably a better oil for your car than Mobil and they'll be able to advise.

Yeah its gone up I think. Used to be £37.99. If you can get a trade card from Halfords then you can save a bomb.

I asked Offords yesterday what they put in my Griff and they replied Shell Helix Ultra (fully syn). Their reasoning was most of their customers don't like to mix oils ( hence why I asked) when topping up, even of the same type, and the Shell stuff is availible everywhere

I was in Halfrauds last weekend for some, went to the counter and was told that'll be £45.99 sir I said "how "F"ing much!?..whilst staring at it in disbelief thinking of telling her where she put it and going and raiding the deep fat fryer, I noticed that they are now 5ltr cans not the usual 4ltr one.
So quick calculator check and its still the same price per litre.

Not sure how helpful this is but I got it in France for something like 30 euros / 5 litre.

Better still buy the Silkolene Pro 10W/50 or 15W/50 fully synth ester based oil (that's provided you were using the Mob 1 15/50), bit better than the Mobil 1 and around £32-35 for 5 litres from Opie Oils.

Ditch the Moby and go for some Castrol GTX (as recommended by Messrs Batty and Austec*).

*In Austec's case as an alternative to their preferred Valvoline...

Thanks for the responses everyone.

I can remember buying Mobil One for the first time back in 1993 when it cost me £15 !

Perhaps the current price isn't that bad if you factor in inflation.

I cant comment on Opie the oil man but he seems to know worryingly large amounts about oil..

The last Mobil 1 i bought was from Costco. Cost me about £22+ Vat for 4 litres.

Even accounting for inflation and L.A.T (Labour added Tax) Over £40 even for 5 litres is painful, considering i change it 4 times a year.

If you must have Mobil 1 i'd definitely go Costco or France...

Or email Opieoilman. I bought my Mob 1 15W-50 from him earlier this year. It was cheaper than Hafrauds and delivered in two days.
