Can anyone recommend any search engines that will list my site for free?
Although I am talking to Google & Yahoo about "pay by click" advertising, I understand that there are several engines that will list my site for free.
Any advice welcome. Thanks.

They will all list you for free yes

Google included, but the pay per click will usually get you more coverage. (Down the right hand side in those extra boxes with Google PPC)

Try here..?

All search engines will list your site for free.

Don't bother with the submit companies they're a waste of time.

You need to do three things:

1) Relevent Links
2) Non-reciprocal Links
3) More links repeating 1 and 2.

No, no, no! You should definitely not use automated software to submit your site to search engines.

The best way to get your site indexed is to generate a link to your site from an "authority" site. This is very easy and can be achieved by linking to a relevant article on your site from something like Digg, Reddit or similar. You should be indexed on Google within 48 hours.

You can also submit a Sitemap directly to Google here, and an excellent free Sitemap creator can be found here.

To see what pages from your site Google (or similar) are currently indexing, you can do this query:

site:www.yourdomain.com

[As an offtopic, why no automated submission?]

Some search engines can spot auto-submitters and will penalise accordingly.

Plus why would the search engines take on a recommendation from the site owner that their site is worth listing, when an independent relevent site is recommending it? Who are they more likely to trust? A link is a recommendation in website speak That's what seach engines are all about, they're not phone directories - they're about providing relevent sources of information based on the keyword entered.

So you're saying the top rankings are all about getting linked from other related popular pages.

ie. getting your personalised xmas card site listed on SantaClaus.com silly

Links from other sites is a major factor, especially in the eyes of Google. The way they look at it is a link to your site is considered a "vote" and the more votes you have, the higher Google consider you. However, Google is very undemocratic and not all links are valued the same. A link from BBC.co.uk is worth far more than one from "My First Homepage" for example!
