You ain't allowed them. Bib's that are keen can do you first time and put you to court. They can also take the plates as evidence then impound your car until you get proper plates put on 'cause they can't let you drive away with no plates. These are the sad bib's with no lives. The others don't give a toss.
I think the look cool by the way.

Not true.
You will find the police are taking a progressivly stronger stance on illegal plates as they are harder to read by ANPR devices and these are producing some good crime arrests so officers are keen to ensure all cars can be read. (not implying you are a criminal but I am sure you can understand officers desire to be able to read ALL cars that pass them).
You can get a warning, vehicle defect form (fix it within 14 days), a fixed penalty ticket (£30 no points) or a summons to court.
The officers gets the choice.
The officer can present his evidence in what ever way he prefers, make a note of the defects in the plate (easy in your scenario), take a photo, take a (or both) plates off, take the whole car. (The last option is there but it costs the force and thus tax payer money to keep taking cars so with budgets as tight as they are this is not a first choice).
Then there is the issue of DVLA, the officer can apply to DVLA (regardless of how they deal with you) to have your plate withdrawn (you would get issued another plate in it's place) - Not a lot of point is your plate means nothing but just is played around with, more effecive if your plate is TO55 ERS as it probably cost you a lot of money and you get nowt back.
This DVLA issue is where the "3 strikes and you're out" comes from as it is their internal policy - But they can work outside it whenever they wish.
My advice is, yes, it does look nice but unless you want to draw attention to yourself and run the risk of being pulled over, "oh and his also got no belt on" or "oh and he was on his phone" - Then I personally prefer to blend in with all the other cars passing the parked patrol vehicle !

I have B&W plates but they are originals and are okay on my car as it's a 1966 model. I think it's fine for older cars, but they could be non-transferable? Post 1973, all cars have to have the modern style of plates fitted.
not quite accurate there if your 70's car had pressed ally plates with plastic numbers, you can still legally fix them, so they don't have to be the modern, flat plastic style ones.
