Whining noise

I've recently experienced a strange whining noise from the front of my engine, almost as if a someone has bolted on a supercharger without my knowledge. Today when I started her up the noise had disappeared but the red charging light stayed on after the engine had fired. I blipped the throttle and it went out but the whining returned. Any suggestions would be gratefully received. My limited knowledge suggests a problem with the alternator. If so can these be repaired or reconditioned or will I need a replacement?

Alternator would be the most likely suspect. They can be reconditioned.

i would agree with Green V8S.
my alternator was winning like a pig suddenly one morning afew weeks back and drained the battery in less than a week while just sitting in the garage it cost me £55 for a reconditioned replacement, not bad as it was the origanal one on the car, date stamped 1992.
Should imagine that the one you will be looking for is a
Magnetti Marreli type A127-65, would also say take the old one with you if local to check bolt holes and connections,

I had the same for a couple of years, after much isolation, detection and substitution it turned out to be...

(btw don't replace...upgrade! the 127-65 isn't up to it. 127-99 is and is a direct fit. its for later cars with more kit like A/C and heated seats)

When mine went on my pre-serp 500, I took it to a Locus service centre and got a brand new one for £55. Apparently its the size/bolt location to those used on the Vauxhall Astra.
