Great to see the closed top cars making a come back. If the ACO get their way by 2010 LMP1 will be 'coupe' class only.
In agreement here! Love these closed cockpits, brings back memeories of the classic Bentley, Mercedes, Nissan era. Looking forward to seeing (not hearing) this next year.

Is it the particle filters that makes them so quiet?
It's mainly the use of direct injection. Most of the noise an oil-burner makes is traditionally down to the fuel pump as diesel injection has to run at many times the pressure of petrol injection. Traditionally this was done using a good old mechanical pump slamming back and forth.
The latest diesel engines uses quiet electric pumps and more efficient direct injection systems which take out all the non-engine noise. That's why it's hard to tell modern diesel/petrol cars apart by ear.
The rest is probably down to a mix of:
1) Still lower reving than a petrol so the frequencies generated are lower and more easily damped in the exhaust.
2) Very deliberate exhaust design to make it as quiet as possible to help the marketing department counter the "diesels are slow and noise" line of thinking in (road car) customers heads.
