This is annoying me... quite often I get a "Emergency Calls Only" come up on my mobile (Sony W810i on Vodafone), even though it claims good signal strength. Normally takes 30secs or so to come back to normal use.

Is this normal? Anyway of changing this?

Could it be something to do with the keypad lock or credit (if you pay as you go)?

I'm not certain, but I think that means your phone has lost contact with your SP but can still register with somebody else's network. It may be that the particular base station you're at was taken off line for some reason, or you just went out of coverage briefly, or maybe there's a problem with your aerial etc causing a temporary loss of connection.

You can make "Emergency Calls Only" without a SIM card. Could it be dirty contacts on the SIM?

It's a trait of SE phones to lock-on to the strongest signal it can find, sometimes to the detriment of your "home" network. It's a right pain when your in a weak signal area and the phone decides to connect to O2/orange instead of voda. That's why i've moved back to nokia with my new phone.

Sounds interesting. Will look into firmware upgrade. It's a contract phone.

Thanks

You're not alone! My K610i does this as well and I'm on O2 contract.

Switching the phone off and on helps, but is a pita. I've also had the phone show O2 and a good signal strength but no one can get hold of me, straight to voicemail and any outgoing call just 'hangs' in the connecting to... window.

Why not go into the network settings menu, and change it from Automatic network selection to manual - then choose your network (Vodafone?) from the list.

That should cure the problem. It did on my phone anyway.
