Hi all,

I#m trying to sort a few things out on my girlfriend#s laptop, and was wondering if anyone can help me remove Norton. I#m thinking of replacing it with AVG Free. I use AVG and am not keen on Norton-is it worth uninstalling norton or is it too much hassle?

It#s an ACER and came pre-installed with Norton 2006.

Any help appreciated

cheers, ben

If it came preinstalled with the product it is probably a time limited version (anything up to 6 months I belive). Norton and McAfee's home version whilst looking very pretty have been known to suck the systems resources; one of them even used ActiveX and IE to handle it's control panel interface... not the brightest of things.

I'd suggest uninstalling it and replacing with AVG/nod32, it's easier to update, causes less 'odd' issues in the long run and generally does the job without overly abusing the computer it's running on.

is it quite easy to get rid,
I heard it was a bit intrinsic, and therefore, dificult to eradicate

I use AVG/Spybot & S&D
they seem to work well

at least so far this year at least

Removing Norton Anti-Virus is a piece of piss. Norton even provide a tool on their website to do it!

Norton Removal Tool

Click that link and download the file in step 2, then run it and it's bye-bye Norton.

AVG, Avast! (both free), Nod32 or Kaspersky (both paid-for) are good replacements. I've just removed Norton from my parents PC for them (as the licence was up for renewal), replaced it with Kaspersky and did a scan.

Kaspersky found 5 files infected by trojans that Norton had let pass.

I bought a machine, C/W norton,

in the last few weeks of its initial 12 months dubious protection

coulden't help but notice, the banners counting down the last few weeks & days co-incided with a number of incidental problems with
Trojans of one sort or another.

Now itas gone and AVG took up the slack
all is well

Hi all,

Got rid of it. Finally stopped those stupid windows popping up in the corner, and gone with avg free.

Thanks for all the replies!
