It goes fast enough to not worry about the odd second here or there

Can't see it myself and have had two. They are fats but not taht fast the top end is a tad optomistic to as it would be pulling about a bit over 6k or something daft - long stroke lump would not last long at those speeds if sustained and the big front screen is a aerodynamic killer. Need stronger lump that can safely pull alot more revs and alot more than the std 260 - 275bhp

no. All tvr figures are flattering to be honest but as said its grunty enough not too worry about and who really does 0-60 sprints anyway!

Those with insufficient mechanical sympathy?

30 -> 130 (or similar) must be a better measure of straight line speed?

I'm in the process of looking for a Chim. I found the 400 was gutless (in all fairness I think it wasn't a good one). 4 x 450s - 2 were bloody quick, 2 were alright, and 2 x 500s. Both of these were DEFINTALEY quicker than the good 450s. There is a lot of debate about these on this site, and the main points of view seem to be a good 450 is better than a lame 500 or, the 500s are most defiantely more powerful. I agree with the latter - they just keep pulling! And that's what I'm looking for - anyone wanna PX a Vauxhall 16v Westy ??!!

Hi there

Some 400s just keep pulling too! When i got mine last year i hit almost 260 kmh(speedo) on the autobahn when i had to back off due to traffic, i still had some travel left on the throttle. And this was with the targaroof off!
I think a slightly fettled 400 can reach the same topspeeds as a 500. Accelerating most 500s will demolish any 400 driver permitting.

Cheers Jens

Dont forget that these cars have been around a while now so are they really standard ones you are test driving? i have literally driven hundreads of these cars before and after mods, the 500's are in a league of there own to be honest, the 500 is the only one fitted with big valve heads and that makes a massive difference, they are also 450 cc's bigger than a 450 and 1000 cc's bigger than a 400, the 400 and 450 are fairly compatible but as i said the 500 is a different thing altogether, this is of course basing it on a good standard engine from the factory, if you have a 400 that is as quick as a 500 then the 500 is either worn or the 400 has been played with!

Rob - seen James recent number post Act plenum and the programable ECU - very close to what you were seeing on dyno. Really good.

Quite right.. I knew of one 500 (not in a chim) that was putting out a poorly 207bhp (now re-built).. a chipped 400 would be seeing that off. At the end of the day, they are all slightly different and I have driven 450's that seem slow against 4.3's and 5's that seem no better against good 450's. I have also driven 400's that seem awful, and others that seem very good indeed. As said though, the 5litre is a bit of a beast and a good 500 is in a league of its own.
