OK, I'll tell...
All of a sudden at a point when I really needed it my flash would not fire when the camera was in multi-shot mode, only in single mode. Tried loads of different rechargeable batteries that I had charged up together a couple of months ago (don't use my flash that much), but every time I changed the camera to multi-shot the flash stopped working.
Turns out to be that all the batteries were a bit low, not low enough for the flash not to fire in single shot (and quite rapidly when off the camera!!!) but too low for multi-shot - must have some sort of voltage detector...
