Advice re new cam

Guys, Just popped in from the Corvette forum, hope thats OK!
I'm looking to buy a digi-slr to replace my old Pentax ME super. I am not an expert by any means, but I have the basics of phtography. I need a good allrounder if such a thing exists, and budget isnt the main issue, so long as I get something I'm happy with.
Can any of you suggest a suitable cam, all the shops I have spoken to say something different, so I'm up a gumtree really! There does seems to be a common thread appearing, ie Canon or Nikon, Canon 300? Any advice or comments would be appreciated
