I have a 1996 Chim 4.0 HC. Diff was getting noisy, so I changed the oil. Lots of small metal particulates in the old oil. Can anyone tell me what car the diff is orginally from and how much it will cost to get it reconditione???

If its any help there,s a good chance if its the ford unit, that will be the pinion front bearing collapsing(whining sound)because the pinion is running out of true with the crownwheel, most common failed bearing in a RWD axle assy.not normally expensive to fix does not usually damage pinion or crownwheel unless left for long periods(you would have to be deaf or daft)you may find a bearing overhaul is all thats needed the numbers are on the bearings & seals, so no excuse for couldent source these guvnor..just the cost of removing unit and replacing that will cost real money.good luck this was probably of no use anyways, but at least you know the the options.
