2000 318ci - Driving me nuts

Hi there guys.. newbie here

I've recently bought an extremely nice looking E46 318ci (2000). Nice looking, nice drive, nice interior.. SHOCKING PERFORMANCE.

I upgraded from an e36 318is, and I'm now thinking that must have been chipped, as it was twice (well feels it) as fast.

Any tips on chipping or performance enhancement suggestions?

The newer car will be far heavier. I expect that is why there is a difference.
Chipping alone on a normally aspirated car doesn't give huge gains. At least particularly noticeable gains anyway.
