Whilst at Silverstone during the testing some cars red rear rain lights we on, but they were green. Was this to let everyone know it was rookie driver at the wheel as there were a few out (Hamilton in a McLaren, Quinterelli in the Spyker). Is it the F1 equivilant of the black cross on yellow square sticker?

Spot on. I didn't know that either until I went to the same test.

I have always thought this, but on the tuesday Christian Albers was driving the Spyker with a green flashing light, so not sure why.

Are you sure it was Albers? Adrian Valles was also out for them on tuesday so they may have been running two cars. Or they could have been running one and forgot to switch the lights!

I watched Albers get into the car, start the engine and then drive off, as he was exiting the garage his light was flashing green, as it was all afternoon.

Not switching the lights is certainly the most plausible suggestion, as i always assumed the green flashing light was for a non regular race or test driver.
