I can see the network and log on (password accepted)
but it errors saying "Limited or no connectivity" and wont allow Internet or email. It works if I go to the office and plug in with a bit of string but Wifi doesn't work and as you can imaging the receptionist cant help.
Any ideas?
I clicked on Wireless Network Connection Status¦Support and it says the problem is because the network did not assign a network address to the computer. Clicking the repair button just results in a pause before the error reappears

Try disabling the wired lan. I had a bunch of laptops that would not connect properly without doing this.

Make sure you have Automatically detect network settings checked in your wireless network adaptor properties.

If by that you mean...
Wireless Network Connection Properties¦Wireless Networks¦Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings. Then yes it is checked.

XP Pro SP2, full to the gills with updates, if it makes any difference!

The first thing I would do as this is in a hotel is seek their advice, hotel's normally have a set of instructions to help you connect.

When you say you can log on, can you clarify what you are logging onto?

I have asked at reception and I get a pretty but blank reply They gave me a tiny slip of paper with the network key on ... 6D0BCCE9FFE42B04134B5567A7
Windows can only see one SSID which is coincidentally the same as the name of the hotel. When I select this it asks for the network key which I faithfully type in (twice cause it asks for it!). It logs on and says "You are currently connected to this network" but simultaneously throws up the comment "Limited or no connectivity" no Internet and no email.

If you goto the command prompt (Start -> run -> cmd -> ok) and type in IPCONFIG do you get an IP address?

Are you using a company laptop or is it your own?

I've typed it in several times(like 10+). I've tried it in lower case and upper case. I've even deliberately typed in the wrong key to prove I get different results if the wrong key is entered, and I do. I am as sure as sure can be I've typed the key in proper like.

thanks for the idea anyways... next
I'm beginning to resign myself to having to sit in the office umbilicated tu t'internet. Still it's free this way

The error means that you're not getting an IP address from the hotel's DHCP server. You might find that their router needs a kick.

I did cycle the power to their router to see if a re-boot helped it.. but alas no

Looks like your laptop is doing the right thing, i.e. trying to contact their DHCP server to get an IP address. Sounds like their DHCP server may be foutu.

p.s. this repsonse is predicated on the belief that it is usually someone else's fault.
