This is troubling me. I've read all the threads I can find and most are centred around changing the oil.

My local Indie has just had the box off to replace the plastic bearing on the end of the gearstick and the change is now quite a bit stiffer than it was, (which was not good). Quite depressing as I asked them to grease up everything in sight to try to improve it.

Anyone know if there is anything they could have messed up, like putting a splined shaft back one tooth out or suchlike? Rover box btw.

The linkeage can get a little stiff if it's out of alignment.

Had the same plastic bearing changed on my box about 1000 miles ago and it's still really stiff, also difficult to go from 2nd to 3rd, some times get fifth and very difficult to go down the box, ie 5th to 4th. It's also a rover box. Would be very interested in a solution.

I had all the bits on the bottom of the gearstick replaced when I first had the car about 3 years ago, and had the same problem - very stiff change but at least I could get the gear I wanted. Now I think the job needs doing again - frequently get a crunch between 1st & 2nd, and reverse is almost impossible to find. In the intervening period the gearchange could never have been described as 'slick'. Perhaps they are all like that. Incidentally, I don't remember this job needing the gearbox out - I'm sure it was done through the top of the tunnel. confused
