Thinking of importing a classic bike from abroad (it was made in the 60's). I assume there will be a number of costs to consider:
- shipping
- import/road tax
- form filling etc

But i was curious as to whether there are any restictions regarding the age of the bike that could be imported (assume that as long as it passes the MOT it should be fine)??

Also if anybody could reccomend a shipping co it would be much appreciated

many thanks CAB

It’s a little easier to import older cars and bikes than the latest stuff.
(Particularly if the same model was originally sold in this country.)

You need to be able to show good title to the bike, with a receipt / proof of purchase, original registration documents etc. If you can prove year of manufacture, you will also be able to get an appropriate “period” registration mark.

The bike will need an MOT, you may also need to sort out stuff like which way the headlamp dips and fit a reflector on the back.- Usually no big deal. BTW. You are allowed a speedometer calibrated in km/h.

Look on the DVLA web site or ask at you local DVLA office, they will be able to tell you exactly what you need to get from the vendor, give you the forms and advise you how much you will have to pay.

Shipping will be much easier if you can get the bike crated. When I imported my RC30, I obtained a crate for a new bike (the dealers throw them away) and adapted it to fit.
