Well I was going to upgrade to a Chimaera in November but I am now seriously considering a cerb. The £3000 a year running costs shouldn't be too much of a problem for me but I have couple of questions.
1. Who would you guys recommend for an independent inspection
2. Have any of you dealt with any companies that offer a private warranty if you purchase the car privately (or are they not worth bothering with)
This car is on Pistonheads at the mo, www.pistonheads.com/sales/68028.htm. Price is good but it's been for sale for a while. And does anyone know what an engine 'recondition' consists of, is it just top end stuff, etc.

To try to answer your questions seriously.
1. Most of the indies will do inspections, probably best to pick one closest to where you find a car. Andy at APM (Liphook), Steve Howard at Euphoria (High Wycombe) or of course Paul at Austec (Crawley) spring to mind down South but this is not an exhaustive list - or as has been said you could employ the car finding services on someone like Mr Agger or Ingleby. Or as Gazzab says, speak to the indies and ask if they know cars for sale, most will now about it if customers are selling up.
2.Warranties will be entirely dependent on who backs it and what it covers in the smallprint, my cynical view is most will be worthless on a car of 96 vintage, you often don't know how weaseley they might be until you come to claim. A lot of people on here have AA breakdown cover with the additional £500 per claim parts and labour warranty which costs about £100 extra per year, it helps with lots of niggly fixes but won't be much use if your crank pops a whole in your block.
3.Car looks nice, much like mine
. You would want to have a word with them about the work that was done and look at the invoice to see exactly what it entailed. However plenty of other stuff to look at other than the engine such as are the electrics all working ok, chassis condition, has it had the later style clutch fitted etc etc, however if you are paying out for an inspection then these hopefully are areas that would be looked at for you.
Good luck with the hunt, have you driven a Cerbie yet? If not get out and drive one, it really is a different beast to the Chim/Griff and even though people kept saying that, I never really understood how different they were until I drove one. It'll probably get under you skin though

Haven't driven a cerb yet but definitely will do, I can imagine that it would be a completely different beast to a chim. That car is the right colour, etc for me and has done a fair bit of mileage (which I would consider a good sign with a tiv). It has been for sale for a long time though. I suppose when these cars are out of warranty then the market for selling one is fairly limited, buyers will know that these cost an average of £3000 a year to run and it's pretty daunting for most. Whereas with a chim or any V8 engined tiv the costs will be that much lower and you know mechanically that it will be pretty bullet proof. The TVR Centre in Barnet have looked after me pretty well in the past so I'd probably try to get the car inspected by them.
