Just drove from Leek -=> Longton -=> Congleton with it scanning: 435 access points, 150 of which had no security yikes

Cisco, netgear and Symbol (who??) where the most common makes, quite a few swear words in the SSID's too. Wish I'd hooked the GPS up as well now! Anyone had any sucess importing co-ordinates into auotroute or the ordinance survey one?

symbol = large manufacturer of Point Of Sale stuff like laser scanners etc. You most likely found a load of shop systems. Used in super markets etc for shop floor data capture and stock checking.

You should see the activity round here, and I live in proper rural Ireland.

I took a fifteen minute drive into the nearest town, Tipperary one time and left my laptop running Netstumbler, I got about 20 APs, lots of them unsecured.

I ran with a GPS unit active in Netstumbler and then later went back using google maps and autoroute to see exactly where they all were, just lining up the cusrsor on the map t othe GPS coords that were reported by Netstumbler.

Interesting stuff and good fun.

Interesting! Looks like only about 6/7 separate locations for the Symbol ones going by the time first seen. Some have more than one AP listed for the same ssid at the same time, but with different mac addresses - these would be repeaters within the same shop then presumably?

Fifteen BT HomeHubs - looks like they're selling well!

Am I sad or what, still poking at this list paperbag

Mo, not sad. Just curious. Personally I'd love to run around with NS running and see what I could find.

Surprised all the Symbol kit showed up, then again it's probably one of those things that isn't connected to anything other than itself.

Yep most places will have multiple APs on the same ssid to give coverage from say the warehouse all the way to the checkouts in a supermarket. That way the handheld device can roam about.
