ADSL Router Question/Advice

Hi just about on the final stretch to move into the new house, was wondering what are the advantages of an ADSL router

was looking at a ADSL modem before

I am at the moment using NTL broadband with internet connection sharing over the Server. what would i get adbantage wise over the normal modem???

Also is there any decent hardware firewall boxes, i currently have a web server, ftp server, mail server configured theough internet connection sharing.

I have 2 Dell poweredge servers, and a dell 2124 10/100 24 port switch with 1 1000mbit uplink for a server. linked to 10 PC's around the home.

What would be best for the setup ??? Router of ADSL modem. or any possible other options

i am going for a plusnet/newnet 2Mps connection with an option of 8 static IP addresses

The main advantage of a router over a server/modem, is that you don't need to have a computer on all the time. Also, it's more 'transparent' than a proxy server setup. Most ADSL routers have some sort of firewall built in. Careful, not all have a modem in them, they connect to your existing modem.

The router handles the requests between your LAN and the internet.
You could buy an extra hardware router or install a software router on one of your servers, which should be connected between the switch and the xDSL modem then.

Routers are available with integrated switch, firewall, WLAN function and DSL modem. These are examples for integrated solutions.

DSL604 is a good box - I have the DSL 504 (no wireless). For my clients we use Watchguard SOHO's for the Firewall but for a home application a Netgear would suffice.

We use Vigors from these guys www.seg.co.uk/. Very good, firewall, USB option, etc.
