Rust Treatment Help Please
Discussion
I need to deal with some early stage bodywork rust. Does anyone know of a guide listing how to do it / what kit and bits required. I have never tackled this before so don't want to start only to find I haven't got everything I need. It's only for the old banger but I don't want it to get any worse. A good but not necessarilly showroom finish required.
Try the following - with the caveat that if this is your first attempt at refinishing, a 'good but not showroom' finish is unlikely...
Thoroughly degrease and clean affected areas - out to the panel edge.
Protect adjoining panels with a tough mask.
Remove all rust and loose finish. A dremel-type tool is handy, but you may be ok with papers and metal bristled brushes.
A good coat of a rust inhibiting/converting treatment - leave it for the recommended time.
Depending on the amount of material removed, the appropriate combination of filler/stopper/primer to rebuild the profile. Etching or rust inhibiting products would be a good choice if compatible with the topcoat system you intend to use. Bridge any perforations.
Paint and lacquer according to the instructions on your system.
Hope this is of use. I'm biased, being in the refinishing trade, but you may find that buying all the above products from Halfords costs about as much as getting a pro in to do a localised repair for you with trade products - and the finish is almost bound to be superior.

Thanks. That was actually another thought in the back of my mind. Tin of this, tube of that and some of the other = £££.
