Someone at work managed to open her door into the side of my S this morning, but she was, at least, honest enough to come and tell me!

Anyhow, the result is a fairly small mark on my door, about 4 centimetres in length and a few millimetres across, the problem being that it seems to have 'chipped' the surface of the door i.e. when I run my finger over the mark it has definite edges, and looking at it I can see that the finish has been removed.

Although I have no desire to fleece my colleague by demanding a full door respray or anything, I would like to try and get it sorted as I think it'll be quite noticeable when the car's clean. What I don't know if whether the damage is likely to be to the fibreglass, or whether it should just be a fairly standard paint job that I might be able to get someone like ChipsAway to tackle. Also, if it's likely to involve fibreglass work, does anyone happen to know of a fibreglass specialist around the Bracknell/Reading area?

Thanks, in anticipation,

Richard

Chips Away do fibreglass, some TVR dealers use them.

You might find that a bodyshop will suggest the entire door is resprayed though...

Matt,

Thanks for the tip about ChipsAway - I'll definitely get them to take a look at it then.

I reckon a bodyshop would almost definitely want to do the entire door to avoid lots of work trying to feather into the surrounding paintwork etc. Mind you, maybe they could respray my mirror at the same time to get rid of all the stone chips!

In my opinion it would be better to get the whole of the door painted. Sometimes a bit later on, if the paintwork has been blown in the edge of the paint may show.

I spoke to ChipsAway who reckon they could do it, but are going to come and take a look to give me a quote.

In terms of getting the whole door done, Jon, that would certainly be a nice option, but I don't want to bankcrupt my colleague! If, on the other hand, she's planning to claim on her insurance, that's a different matter...

Being a Gentleman (honourable as it is) will not get your car back how it was before she damaged it.

She was honest telling you but she will, no doubt, expect a bill.

If I were you I'd get a quote for a door respray and talk to her about it. If it's too dear then her insurance will have to cough up (and she'll have to pay the excess)

Richard,

Bad luck mate, thank god the damage wasn't any worse, and at least on a small and simple (ish) park of the bodywork.

Gotta think objectively here, if she'd hit a stranger's car, they'd fleece her without thinking, and it would definitely be an insurance job.

However, since you're be sorting out and don't want to fleece her, if you can do it for less than the excess or thereabouts it might be better, and won't affect her no-claims either.

If her excess is anything like mine (never less than £300), then I'd imagine it would cover a full door respray.

Saying that, if this had happened to you out and about, chances are that the perpurtrator (sp?) would have ran off leaving you to foot the bill...
