I had my front bumper re-sprayed recently under the warranty because the lacquer was coming away, recon it was a doggy re-sprays from when the previous owner had it. When I went to pick it up I thought the job was alright, until I looked closely and noticed it was a slightly different shade of silver that is really noticeable where the panels meet. So I had a word with the sprayer and he said that there is only one colour from Vauxhall and that’s how it should be. I told him I wasn’t happy and he said as the cars are painted in OZ the only way to sort it would be to blend it in to the original paint. I haven’t agreed to this as I don’t want one half of my car a different colour to the other. Does anyone know if the paint can be altered to suit the original?

Had two paint jobs (sadly).

One by VX dealer where I bought the car and it was crap and the paint is peeling away on the front bumper an dteh match is well not perfect (getting it rectified)

Another by Greens and it was perfect.

I would ask Jeff Gates at Greens about what you need to do.

Tricky one that.

Silver is THE worst colour to match! That said, application technique will alter the final effect. Blending in, especially with silver is a common technique for just this reason.

If they are really good and can mix paint on site and have someone experienced at colour matching, then maybe it can be matched perfectly. But there arn't many places that can do that!

Silver really is hard to repair, and i speak from personal experience!

You have my sympathies. I have a little problem too. Before I bought my 'ro it was hit while parked and the driver's side rear quarter panel was dented between the arch and door. The panel beating and finish is second to none but it's not the same red as the rest of the car. I'm now trying to get details of who did the repair from the seller so I can get it sorted but he hasn't got back to me yet so I may just have to bite the bullet and get it redone at my expense (although I'd rather not). The car is solid red so you'd think it'd be fairly easy to match, considering the skill that went into fixing the panel I'm frankly surprised that they got it wrong. I'm a little bummed about it as I didn't notice it when I picked it up (looks fine from some angles and I didn't really stand back to look at it). Still could be a lot worse and I don't think a localised respray of a solid colours costs to much does it?

Caspy, how much would you charge?

Is the Monaro red a standard Vauxhall colour or is it something special? I'd quite like a touch up kit for stone chips etc.

Cheers,

Mackie.

I had a problem also with Phantom mica (black) and apprently the colour code does not match that of the uk phantom i got mine blended and it was ok alternatively phone oz and get the paint content makeup sent to you or emailed then get the uk panel place to mix it accordingly, that way it should match perfectly.

Got to send it back in next week so they can have another go, so I guess I’ll just have to see how it turns out. The sprayer did say that he may be able to get someone to tint the colour, but after what Roger has mentioned about technique, I have a felling it could be the problem. The overall job was not that great, a few runs in some hard to spot areas.

I had exactly the same problem with a solid red HSV. What started off as a respray of the front PU (bumper) and part respray of bonnet due to laquer peel and stone chips for 250 quid turned into a full glass out respray. The good news is it is now perfect. The bad news was a bill for 3.5K.

I scraped the rear bumper and thought it best to have it resprayed via my main Monaro dealerships bodyshop.

Went to pick it up and saw what a total c**k up they had made of it. As it was only a blend in job, it looked worse. It was borderline Orange and it really stuck out. The guy who sprayed it said it looked alright to him and also remarked that the plastic body trim was already different shades of Yellow compared to the main body panels!!! Also, seeing as my job requires a high degree of colour awareness (as does his - apparently!) I wasn't going to be fobbed off especially as it was costing me £140 for a corner of the bumper.

The bodyshop manager came out, and all he really wanted was my car out of his bodyshop. He eventually agreed that it was incorrect and agreed to redo it. Also, the car was parked across the way from his office window and the sun was shining on it and to say it looked ok was a joke. Got it back next day and he said they had used the wrong shade test system. But bear in mind, the details for the car should have been to hand for them to refer to.

In certain daylight conditions, the second respray certainly isn't a perfect match so when I get some spare cash, I'll go to a local independent bodyshop who care about what they're doing.

I did remark on the job to the dealership salesmen. Their replies made me smile...

Hmmm, 3.5k is a lot! I really think it should be possible to fix provided the right colour is used. Can anyone recommend someone? It's only the area between door and rear wheel arch.

You can not even rely on that must trusted establishment situated in Kent as the body shop is MercedesAlpha whose quality control seems to be lower then Vauxhalls. It took me four visits before I was satisfied, on the third visit to collect the car with runs and blobs still on the paint work the workshop manager claims he did not inspect it, why not when he obviously had a problem customer like me. Anyway sorted now which is the main thing.

lubaz, go back to see this guy and ask him did he check out his paint companies colour services. I used to be a paint company rep now i'm a bodyshop manager so seen this a thousand times before, get him to pull his finger out and find another shade for ya for what their using. And yeah roger 440 is right mate, silvers are an arse all they are are fine flakes of aluminium and dependent on factors of booth temp, air pressure, paint viscosity etc it'll all change apperance.dependent to is the type of plastic used as most PPE plastics suck in the colour causing it often to go darker.Get the guy to show you the colour chip on the car if its to dark or to light its probably a mixing ballsup if its only one shade.but youve paid for a service tell him to sort it.Oh and next time you pass an AUDI dealership, stop in and check out the bumpers on the A4's their a mile off to the rest of the car.and hyundai's noble white.....we have 7 shades of it....
hope you get it sorted.

Cheers for the useful advice kiwiis200, hopefully I can now make sure the colour is right before it goes on. Should the colour chip be slightly lighter then if the plastic bumper is going to suck in the colour, because the colour does seem to be a shade or two darker?

I have had two sprays so far for very minor 'ailments'.

First was from err a 'back street' bodyshop that mixed it right and looked fine but is not very different so my front left bumper under close inspection does not match. Aprox cost £75

On the other hand Platinum Vauxhall (not a monaro dealer) did a fantastic job on the passenger rear wheel arch with a perfect match. Aprox cost £900 but was an insurance job (someone reversed into me).

I just had the chips on the bonnet done (one of them a big one where the car in front ran over a wheel trim in the outside lane of the motorway ) and also the back bumper which had a small casualty where I reversed into a post
It cost me 235 quid and it looks like new again. Just goes to prove you can get a good job done for sensible money.
I also put the 6.0 brakes on (eventually, thanks Hainser) and they really made a difference. The ABS is always coming on now when chasing it round the lanes, which would never happen before, which is a bit off-putting, but at least I know its going to stop

Try finding a bodyshop that uses R-M paint system that was what i was peddeling and its superb failing that Glasurit both work on a colour spectrum principle, which means if you only have say in Standox 2 shades of your colour and neither match then you can go abstract and find a colour chip in the colour box that matches. it might also be the Lacquer their using as high solids 2 pack Lacquer do tend to darken silvers up on edge to edge paint jobs OEM's tend to only apply 1 and a half coats anyway so if you blend for instance a wing into a front door too much lacquer on door edge will darken front door to back one.its all down to compitance i reckon.but dont take any crap off them believe me you'll get blagged so they dont have to do it again. good luck buddy
