I have a laptop that sits in the lounge and is used for the occasional PH surf when the TV's rubbish.

Recently the bit where the battery is has been getting very hot. Not "warm" as it had been for the past 4 years, but HOT as in "ouch, that burns".

It now can't stay on my lap unless there's a cushion in the way.

Is this bad? Any ideas on a fix? And does anyone want to buy a laptop that's not iffy at all...?

What is it?

Don't put it on a cushion, that'll just make it hotter, and could damage the battery or laptop. Try resting it on something like a book or tray.

What brand laptop is it?

Some Dell, and I think Acer and Toshiba laptops have problems with certain batteries which were made by sony and can potentially explode, your manufacturer should have a search on the website to check the serial number to see if it is of risk.

Chap at work had a "hot" laptop. He's a perpetual moaner so we basically ignored him for a while.
He came to visit our office one time and during the course of the day I had reason to pick up the laptop.

eek Feck me it was hot!

Had a quick look around and noticed that the corner where the fan was was bashed in a bit; it had obviously been dropped and the casing had jammed the fan. Great.

It went back to Dell for refurb and they kindly informed us after the fact that the keyboard needed replacing too as it was full of old coffee...

Would have been (much) cheaper to junk it and buy a new one.

It's a Samsung P10 (I think).

Think I'll just buy a new battery and see what happens!

Good thought about the cushion

If it's never, ever going to be taken away from a power point just unclip the battery and recycle it. Most laptops will run quite happily with it removed as long as their power supply is plugged in and connected.

If you do want the option of taking it on the road then yeah it's time for a new battery pack, they do fail and if I remember correctly this is a 4 year old laptop? So it's had a pretty good innings IMHO.

It sits on my lap in the lounge without wires. I don't like wires When finished it gets recharged!
