I have a chance to put in a pair of 200 cell cats, 130mm diameter for my 993 turbo. I was told that the 100 cell cats last about 5000 miles but the 200 cell ones are as durable as the originals. Any experiences?

100 cells lasting 5k miles? What a load of tripe.

Having said that, it is said that 200 cell cats are enough for a 993tt unless you are going significantly over 500bhp, then you need to start thinking about 100 cells (or no cat!), but i think most people go for 100 cells because that's what Fabspeed/Cargraphic/etc sell.

You know Jim's cats are on ebay right now, right? (Jim Swift, MJIMS from rennlist)

It's strange then that the guy who runs the place told me this. It's a Porsche specialist that does some great work. He built a modified Boxster with a 997 engine stroked to 3.9 with a bespoke crankshaft (target was more torque but puts out 390hp). Looks and sounds stunning, lots of carbon etc. He also has a lovely 964RS being prep'd for a trip to N'ring with plastic/perspex windows, carbon etc - very light. He spent an hour showing me around and I spoke to a couple of his mechanics. I speak a fair bit of German but maybe there was some translation error.

Anyway, I think I'll go with the 200 cells. He showed me the stock cats side by side.

p.s My rear bumper is off at the moment to replace a bunch of heat shields, so I have to decide by tomorrow to have these fitted. Thanks for the Ebay tip but timing isn't good.

I've gone with 130mm 100 cell cats - they only issue is an occasional check engine light due to brief poor clean up of the emissions at part throttle. Flew through the MOT.

silver,

As long as you're going 130mm (rather than 100mm like some people have done) and you're staying south of about 500bhp then you should have no problems with 100 cell or 200 cell cats. If he has 200 cells at a good price and the rear end is apart anyway, go for it!

You might be wanting a sports exhaust to go with it though, and once you've done that you really should make the most of your flow by upgrading the ECU (right aceparts?)... and so begins the transformation (right derestrictor?)

no, he showed me the 100 cell cats and did give me a choice. The 200 cells are also 130mm, noticable larger in diameter than stock but shorter in length and of course much lighter in weight.

I had my wheel alignment done there a couple of months ago, great job. The car handled like it was on 'rails' after that. He charged 150 euros, about 100 quid.

Wat kind of price should I be paying for a pair of 200 cell cats (130mm) and their installation (opening up the cases, removing old cat, rewelding etc)? I'll get a price off the local indy over here tomorrow.

Alan had this done to his cats i think (aceparts) so should be able to give you a price to go on.

Out of interest, do you know how he aligned your car? Standard spec, RS spec, something in between? I am collecting info about alignment specs before i set mine up...

Cheers.
