Can anyone recommend an off the shelf power steering rack? Car will be mid-engined so I am thinking it may be better to use an electrically driven rack rather than pump operated (as I can be bothered taking pipes through the car etc

I can't see that you would need a power rack in something mid engined and that light. However, A power column ala Corsa might be an easier route

Just as an aside....
If fitting a powered column the structure that the column bolts to must be capable of taking significant forces without deforming etc. If the columns mountings were to ever part company the potetial damage to car and driver as the column thrashes around doesn't bear thinking about.

MGF uses an power assisted column, which can be made significantly smaller than the Corsa. Don't know any more than that but if interested speak to Chris Allinson at zcars.

Our 6R4 used a Cavalier power rack and an electric Saxo pump.

Was that a pretty straightforward conversion ? as thats the way i was thinking of converting my capri rack to electric pump to save space under the bonnet, what kind of pressure does the rack need, thinking of hoses/connections here.

The Saxo pump driving a standard power rack is a very common mod for rally cars. The Merc A-Class also has a nice pump/reservoir assembly that looks ripe for this kind of conversion.
