We're using exceed 3d to log onto Suse Linux based machines (we use these to run simulation software) from our windows-equiped PCs but lately, exceed seems to crash all the time.
Can anybody suggest an alternative (possible free?)?

Thanks!

VNC and just throw the display out to the client?

I used to prefer that method as if the PC had a wobbler (they tend to), the run on the *nix box was unaffected. Indeed, you could shut down, go home, reconnect and carry on...

VNC is one option.
Poke around NoMachine's website for their NX stuff, Free-NX being the open source version of it. It's a combination terminal server and bandwidth limiter (roundtrip supression and compression) and worked reasonably well. I'm not 100% sure if they've cracked having disconnected sessions continuing to process though, but it might be worth setting it up on a dev/test system and see if it works better than Hummingbird.

I run the version of XOrg which comes with cygwin. It's free, and I don't think it has ever crashed on me.

I persoanlly use putty, free and fits on a keydrive ... standalone so no install.

I do run exceed though, and ssh from putty and the management server which throws up a new window.

Exactly, we use putty & ssh as well. So we only need something to replace exceed really.

I've been messing about with Cygwin this week but it doesn't seem that easy and we use KDE, so I suspect that might be the cause of me not getting it to work?
