Gearboxes

Hi, im 17 and just past my test. I have a 1.6 gti but want to put a 1.9 init.
I have the engine but i dont no weather to look for a 1.9 gearbox for it or put my 1.6 gearbox on it.
What are you views becuase i dont want it to be to short.

Stick with the 1.6 unit, its better....

1.6 or Mi16 gearbox will make it go a little bit better, but there's nowt wrong with the 1.9 box (aslong as its only used on the 1.9 engine)

In reality about 118mph.

1.6 and 1.9 engines differ enough to not bother putting the 1.9 box onto a 1.6.

Keep the 1.6 a 1.6. The engine is cracking and far more revy than the 1.9.

If i wanted a longer fifth gear for motor ways, what would you change it to?

I was thinking a 1.8 diesel fifth gear or something like that?

im not sure what gerabox i had on my old 8v, but 5th gear was definately not matched to 1st through 4th. When giving it some, the revs just used to drop off too much going into 5th, preventing any further adrenaline rush. I hated it.

Get an Mi16 engine bunged in, then a 6spd box from the 306 Gti.

I would, ive had 1 offered to me but im only 17 and bein drivin bout 6 months.

I think the 1.9 will be fast enough for now.

I hope the deisel 5th isnt to slugish, have to have it changed back if it is.

I'd just stick a 1.9 final drive into the 1.6 box by the looks of things.

A 1.6 box with a 1.9 engine is just gonna be silly

You were still full on at the end of 4th?! Man you can bust most speed limits in 2nd, on the track I can understand but looking for more acceleration at the end of 4th I would think you have the wrong car. It is all about B road blasting, not top speed and a corner will always be in the way before you reach the end of 4th (and generally the end of 3rd).

Well top of 4th at 6k is only 100mph, so not out of the realms of dual carriageway/motorway work.

have to agree, its not a decent blat if you dont get into top gear.

and though i'll never be able to check now, i'm not sure it did get 100 in 4th. it only really did 110 comfortably anyway, 120 with a big run up

Top of 4th in the Mi is a little higher

Personally a decent blat in a 205 occurs on the twisties hence not topping out in 4th...

Sorry to be an old fart, but I would not recommend driving a 205 flat out having just passed your test. Unless the suspension is in tip tip condition things can get interesting above 100MPH.

As has already been said 205 is about the twisties not high speed.

The more interesting issue is the lift off over steer, great fun but will put the inexperienced through a hedge. Personally I wouldn't recommend a 205GTi to a new driver for this reason but each to his own. A 309 handles better, is cheaper to buy and insure but is slightly slower (I own and run both).
