Is it really that much better than the 3.0 TDI?
We're looking for a diesel 4x4 as the family car... which means my wife will drive it most of the time, and while she's not a petrolhead she wants something with reasonable grunt.

I'm sure the V6 TDI is probably a pretty good motor - performance etc seems to be in line with all the other 3-ish litre diesel SUVs

But does the V10 really transform the car? It's 18k more as a new car, and while you get a pile of extras for that, it would still need to pretty special in terms of ride, handling and performance to justify the price increase.

What are the residuals like? A good second hand buy?

thanks in advance for any thoughts!

I don't know anything about the Touareg but I have the 5.0 V10 diesel in my Phaeton. It's an awesome engine which delivers more power than you could shake a stick at. Very smooth too.

But mine is poorly and in the garage at the moment

The 3.0 tdi is an excellent motor. Smooth power delivery and more than capable.

Persoanlly, I'd go for a 3.0 tdi Altitude with a few extras and save some cash.
