Yeh well, I'm thinking of taking the 996 C2 at some point, but I'm quite sure I'll end up giving it 85% tops. Or I may take the BMW 325Ci and give is 95%

I think the point of safe driving on ANY track (NR or other) is not to give it 100% beans all the way, more to enjoy your day out safely. If you are pushing the envelope too far, you will come unstuck.

Go, drive, enjoy. If you are going faster than you feel comfortable with then you are going too fast. If the comfort factor is altered by close proximity to financial ruin then so be it.

I have heard it said that you should never take a vehicle to the Nurburgring that you are not happy to leave in the crash barriers.

Sounds a bit negative - surely most people driving there would also quite like to be able to drive back home afterwards too!

The key to driving any circuit is to drive within your own ability. If you try and drive your car beyond your ability you will have a big accident, it is as simple as that. It has nothing to do with the capability of the car that you are driving but your own ability to control the vehicle and to gain an understanding as to what it is happening to your vehicle as you drive it. A lot of the guys on here think that the pasm system gives them the ability to drive like michael schumacher.
Well the best piece of advice is learn to drive a pre 964 Porsche at anywhere near its limit and you will then have a true understanding of driving a Porsche very quickly.

well i kicked my GT2'S ass on parts of the ring ......slightly damp lit my turbos up and she started to spin her wheels in 4th...so i backed off.....got my head back into gear and enjoyed the experience.... there is nothing to match the ring.. NOT ON THE PLANET I LIVE ON ANYWAY.......I LOVE THE PLACE

Lets put it this way, on my first day I went straight on at Adenauer Forst ("failure to turn left" - though to be fair I consciously took the decision to go straight on over the kerb and onto grass, knowing I couldn't make the corner - and spun exiting Brunnchen 2, parking very neatly, facing exactly the wrong way, on the grass, two feet from the armco.

These were on different laps I hasten to add.

Nevertheless I was driving way below 100%.

Whilst leaving my car in the barrier would be very far from financial ruin, I would certainly have been quite cross.

But would it be more fun in a car that didn't belong or cost us anything if it went titsup or is taking our on car part of the fun.

my opinion ; the fun bit is taking your own car on there ....driving to your personal ability / enjoying your car / seeing how far yah can push it without been a fool / putting that sticker in your side window so when yah get back home people can see you went /returned / and lived to tell the tale....like i say for me one of if not the best experience in my life but i am a complete petrolhead.............full on !!!!!!!!!!

Well this time next week i'll be leaving s/wales to go to the ring in the gt3 already begining to wish it had pasm, been there twice before but never in my pride and joy ,wont be giving it 100% but you can still make mistakes!!,trouble is when your driving around everyone wants to get back to car park and say they passed a gt3 on the last lap!! agree with sambaman though its one of the best places on earth the atmosphere all around is fantastic, can't wait ,but also can't wait to be driving home in one piece

Absolutely the best experience in a driver's seat. But can also be one of the most expensive.
A mate got dinged nearly EUR1000 for Armco and towing last weekend. Could barely make out the Armco dent, and towing company demanded cash on the spot with no AA or ADAC consideration. Fortunately the car is drivable.
Armco bills can easily reach EUR5000 and have to be settled on the spot.

I don't think that there is any glory in driving 10/10s. There will always be a faster car, a more experienced driver to pass us by. For those who think it is a race track during tourist days, the expense can be quite high.

A Swedish reg BMW dove under another mate into the Kleine Karoussel Monday. The mate took evasive action (read drastic) to avoid being collected. Last lap of Tuesday prior to the fog ending the day, that same Swede had binned it at Hedwigshoehe. Well and truly converted to scrap.

There is simply too much change from lap to lap with fluids, debris and a bit of lunacy from those with egos trying to get by - for one to carry 100% commitment on all corners.

Definitely a better outing when one can come away from a day at the Ring saying that "I improved at 5 corners today and became smoother while having regard for others around".

I agree with 930 slope - just keep your head - 10 years ago this wouldn't have been an issue, but now the GT4 and top gear generation are at the ring, from all Germany's neighbours, the place is just too damn busy!!

Live to fight another day.

Save your car.

Don't go 10/10, unless someone else will pay the bill.

And you are immortal...

German hospitals are good I'm sure, but I don't want to find out!!

Sure, I imagine everyone would be in that category ... but don't gamble with what you can't afford to lose.
