Ok, so my small town is now ringed by ANPR cameras. They must put them up after midnight. Almost every semi impoprtant junction has a camera and video stream. Then there are several on straight bits of road, not to mention the truvelos'. There are dozens of them, anpr's. If I want to ask queations, who do I ask? How long are 'they' saving my data and what about misuse or potential misuse?

The Tesco superstore is now doing it to stop people parking for over 3 hours. As if I really believe that. Asda have a bloke with a clipboard for the same purpose. He changes the page every day The Tesco store has so many cameras inside it's unreal, every isle is covered not to mention the checkouts etc plus they can look into other shops like KFC which I know is an abuse but they do it all the same. Staff were proud that they could see that far away. They share info with bib about local scrotes so know who to look out for.

I'm getting really cheesed off with this intrusion. How can I complain and what are their obligations?

I guess ANPR is only different to ordinary CCTV if it compares your number to a database.

If you haven't done any crime, you have nothing to fear.

Agreed but who's database are we talking about, theirs or bib? Who's checking the video, them or bib? Will they know when I've been shopping as well as what produce I buy and how I paid for it? Will they know the type of car I drive so I can be mailshot for tesco insurance purposes? Will the bib have my data for 6 months and will they share that with tesco if I look a bit 'iffy'.

Who's in charge here, I'd like to ask some questions?

Did you know that private companies operate an ANPR type system for car parks so if you stay longer that the time they post you can be fined.

Buzz, wrong. Look up the Bill Of Rights of 1689.

Not exactly ANPR is the responsibility of the police be it Scotland, Englandshire bla bla bla. I am coming from the Scottish angle. private coy have ANPR type cameras not actual ANPR as per the type police use. Is that any clearer?

Not a criminal fine. A civil penalty.

Not a criminal fine. A civil penalty.
Which would then presumably be a civil matter and require chasing through the courts?

I think this will be part of the police anpr system as the police anpr's appeared overnight in several places on the road outside the store.

Of course that is the case. You are issued with a civil penalty & if you don't pay they pursue you through the courts.

Tescos will have a publicly named Data Registrar, whom who can contact about Data Protection issues. Of course, your car registration isn't covered, as that's not your private data...

infoadmin@tesco.co.uk
or telephone 01992 646 484
or write to:

Information Administration
Tesco PLC
Tesco House
Delamare Road
Cheshunt

Boosted you could write in to the local area commander and ask just those question concerning your data. It is likely it will be kept for a long time as ANPR is the new tool in fighting crime (as well as getting people with no insurance / licence etc). ANPR is used to identify active criminals and benefit cheats etc. As a normal person you will have nothing to worry about from those cameras, its the speed cameras you have to watch for!!

As for cctv from tesco onto KFC it does not really apply as I am fairly sure it falls outside most legislation. Most CCTV is kept for a period of a month.

Thank you 7db and Mr annie vxr. I appreciate what a useful tool anpr can be but have concerns for the future. I really do expect it will be abused at some stage and we'll all regret it. It's probably an abuse to use your camera's to look into a neighbouring shop to spy on it's customers.

I'd expect tesco's to be using the data to gather info on customer profiles, age of cars etc etc, insurance data etc, as they already do with their loyolty card systems. I'm pretty sure a very useful tool.

They know everything about you....

The aim is that wherever there is a CCTV camera then it will be linked to ANPR.
