Broadband + wireless router?
Discussion
Hi all, here's another one for you knowlegeable tech-pistonheaders
I'm about to sort out a broadband connection and telephone for the flat we just moved into. There's four of us and we need a wireless router. I'm looking at bulldog 16Mb for 24.50/ month with the bulldog phone line for £10.50/month. It comes with a modem, but I think the wireless router they have is £49.
We basically need an unlimited download fast connection, phone line and wireless hub. Does this seem like a good deal? And any recommendations for a budget wireless router?
Any advise appreciated!
cheers,
ben

I don't know much about Bulldog I'm afraid, but wireless kit wise you want to go with Netgear (I work with the stuff all day long, and I'd never use another manufacturer.)
If you decide to go the Netgear route, drop me a line, I can get some good prices on Netgear Wireless ADSL stuff

bulldog have their own network so 16Mbps should be achieveable if you are within 4Km of the exhchange (or I should say your copper loop is less than that)
Id go for a Netgear DG834PN - the Rangemax jobbie for best coverage if you need to serve multiple PCs in a home - that will give you a real world 20Mbps wireless in most 3-4 bed houses so it wont become the bottleneck.

I bought a 3com 54mbps wireless router with free pcmcia card and usb wireless thingy.

VERY easy to setup, and once you've done that, it never needs to be touched.
I run 6 machines off it and it's excellent.

ive been using bulldog for 6 months now. i think its great. im using the 8mb package and i think its very good. so the 16mb will be much better. the telephone service is more or less the same as bt but just not called bt. i got a free wireless router with mine because that was the offer at the moment but if you speak to their customer services you could blag your way into getting a free one. plus if you use my reference as well you will get £20 or £50 off your first bill. if you do join letme know ill give you my reference

Hi all- thanks for your advice.
I think we're going for the bulldog 16Mb and bulldog line. I'm going to try and blag a free router, but if I have to buy one, I'll try netgear.
k50del- what price am I looking at for a budget wireless router for 4 pc's? I've got no idea about which model I should go for, so any help would be great.
cheers,
ben

Best unit for your needs is the DG834G - it's a combined wireless router and broadband ADSL modem, it has 4 ethernet ports for direct connection to pc's and is so easy to configure it's not true.
Price wise they are about £56 from e-buyer, but if you drop me a mail through my profile I should be able to sort you out a decent discount from that.

I'm not a computer techie, but I agree with the Netgear comment.
I've set up 4 or 5 networks now, using Belkin and netgear, and the netgear is so much easier. it just seems to do it, whereas the belkin needs all sorts of configuring

Not quite sure what you needed to configure with the Belkin apart from entering the Network key to make it work. Yes it has lots of other features that can be turned on or off as is needed but surely this is the same for all manufacturers. I have used D-Link and Netgear and found them all the same. The only advive I would give is to stick with just one manufacturer then there is more chance of it all working seamlessly.

Hi there,
'scuse me barging in here - normally I post in the Tunnel Runs etc but I regularly lurk here too! Having got bored of sitting upstairs by myself every time I wanted to browse the Interporn I have to say the reviews of the Netgear DG834G you suggested look very encouraging. Is this discount you mention a personal thing (not that the eBuyer price is hideous anyway) or is it open to the great PH unwashed?
Just thought it'd be daft not to enquire before I buy one of these chappies from eBuyer anyway
Cheers,
Andy

PH thing in general really, the more I buy, the better the price.
They come in a plain brown box rather than a Netgear branded one, and that's about the only difference.
I'm doing an order for a few friends later in the week, if you want me to stick one on, let me know.

Hi Derek,
Much obliged if you could add one on for me. Just checked with my work and they're happy with the security of the box. Not sure if the PH PM is working too reliably at the moment so probably best to just mail me on email /at andyphillips /dot fsbusiness /dot co /dot uk with payment details etc or pop another post on here.
Thanks again,
Andy
Hi all,
sorry about the late reply- haven't logged in for while. Thanks for the advice guys!
Del- We got a free wireless router with a connection, but if that can't handle 4 pc's on it, I'll drop you a mail about the netgear equipment if that's ok?
I went with beunlimited. Activation date is tomorrow, so we'll see what its like.
It's £24 per month for a 24 Meg connection, and a £24 connection fee, so looks very reasonable. A free wireless modem came with it as well. I'll keep you informed on the quality/reliability of it...
cheers,
ben
