Dell XPS, Quad SLi Nvidia graphics cards and a hooooge monitor.

That's in the £whatever category

But Dell's XPS range; which considering the horsepower inside and the very nice as standard 3 year next business day waranty and the English speaking tech support staff who don't read from a script... well worth the money. I belive XPS support piggy backs on Gold level corporate support.

That's for the ultra high end though.

£1,039 for the XPS 700 desktop. Add on a little more for a display and your laughing to be honest.
To be honest there aren't a lot of 'old' machines floating around that will take newish parts (Dual core, PCI-Express, etc.), so whilst you could but components over time it's better to start with new.

If you are going to spend £1500 plus then go for a Scan or a Vadim, check the cases on the Scan links, worth the extra cash alone.

If your spending big bux on a gaming rig today then hold of a month or two.

Nvidia's G80 line is almost out now, with leaked specs it looks stunning, will be fully dx10 and blowthe gf7 level stuff out of the water.

Then theres quad core CPU's on the horizon too...

yep -= wait until the new year for Windows Vista, DX10, G80 ...otherwise you will be splashing out £2K + and it will old hat in Jan,

generally it all depends on what resolution you play at - if you have say a 17" LCD and play at 1024 x 768 then you can get a mid to high end graphics card and and PC for £1k that will cover off most popular games right now

if youwant to play at 1280 + on a 19" then you need a good single high end card from Nvidia or ATI

anything higher than that and you really want dual cards for top quality eye candy and you are up at a £2K rig for something decent with good CPU/memory/HDD too.......

Just so you can see that you don't need high end, take a look at the rough specs for my laptop.
2.26Ghz P4-M (i.e. not Core Duo / Solo arch).
1Gb RAM
80Gb HDD
17" WUXGA screen.
Nvidia GeForce 6800 Ultra (Mobile version obviously).
So it's a bog standard XPS Gen2 laptop in other words.

1 year old give or take. Chokes on Doom 3 based games (i.e. D3, Q4, Prey, but what doesn't?) at high resolutions but can belt along in Half-Life 2 at native resolution with all goofies turned. It's more than man enough to pull of pretty much any game on the market and probably enough to do the deed in a DX10 game next year if I decide I can be arsed spending the Mankysoft tax to get Vista. Although its depatable how fast games devs will move to DX10 as their only platform as the number of customers running DX9 is still going to be quite large in 12 - 15 months time.

PC hardware cycles expeptionally fast sometimes, so being high end or bleeding edge is practically impossible. I aim for middle of the road and say "bollox to it" as far as waiting goes, but that's just me

mmmm...the spec of your laptop isnt exactly shabby for mainstream stuff - a 6800 ultra, 2Ghz or more and 1Gb RAM should cope with most recent games in 1024 x 768

..horses for courses really - depends on what you are used to and what games you play (as always) .....I know some game geeks that make their CPU and GFX card decision just based on performance in a particular game FFS

...Im in the 'one gen off (b)leading edge' camp as I like to have near best, but dont want to pay the +50% premium to have that GPE or CPU that performs 10% better ...Im happy with the next one down on the list !

"My cards are leet I get like 10 frames over the..." *BLAM BLAM BLAM* "MULTI KILL". Although having said that the CounterStrikers seem to have taken it to a whole new level.

And it spends 99% of it's time with Notepad and Winamp 2.95 running... maybe DOSBox or STEEM but that's about it these days.

LOL - exactly ...all depends on use

...I only really only play UT on-line anymore (not enough free time )....but most I dip in asnd out of most other popular stuff offline - RTS, FPS and driving games mainly ....and I get frustrated if I get any slowdown on my set-up with a 24" Dell widescreen running everything 1920 native with a 7900 SLI set-up ..and there are quite a few games that will slow it down - especially with high AA and filtering levels switched on .....therese no point in going quad SLI though....its too buggy - better off waiting for DX10 and the next gen Nvidia/ATI cards IMO

BUT

to the untrained eye - most modern games on a mid range card in 1024 are better than an Xbox or PS2 so a £1K PC is plenty good enough ......
