I have read that the gearbox change from the Rover unit to Borg Warner T5 happened in 1994 but as is the case with TVR's there is no specific changeover date.
Having looked at a few 1994 models I have noticed that the door opening knob moved from the side of the handbrake lever to its own little section in the transmission tunnel, my question is was this a result of the gearbox change ie reverse on the T5 box is back and to the right, just where the door opening knob used to be? if so does this identify the gearbox type or is this just another TVR quirk?

Yes David. Door opener in handbrake/gearlever cluster = Rover g/box. Door opener in middle of console = BW T5.

Dave by all acounts it seems the best one to go for is the T5, it also feels the best of the two.
