I've currently got a Canon D30 (the old one) and i'm getting to the point where i'm constantly being frustrated by it and am feeling as though it's limiting me a bit. I think it's just suffering from old age really, well that and not being too great in the first place. Combine this with a lovely set of cheap lenses and i don't really stand a chance. So a complete kit replacement is in order i feel.

Now my initial thought would be to go to a 1d mk1. I'm not chasing 4 gazillion megapixels, i want something that's sharper and less generally dimwitted than my D30, and the 1d seems to fit the bill at a reasonable price 2nd hand.

But....
I thought that as i'll have to upgrade my lenses to go with it i may as well consider Nikon kit. Trouble being that i haven't the first idea of what's what in the world of Nikon. Hence i'm after some advice on where i should go now. I shoot mainly motorsport stuff, with landscapes a fair bit, and recently a fair bit of people (which is what's highlighted my camera's failings).

So, what next?

Look at the D200 and up for Nikon or 30D upwards Canon.

Go look at both to see what feels right in your puddies, size, weight, ease of use etc...

Take a Compact Flash card and see how the pictures come out.

I have a D30 and recently bought a 30D. I must say that I am far happier with the D30 than the 30D. This might be because I had very high expectations of the 30D and had already accepted the limitations of the 6 year old D30.

The pictures I get out of my D30 are always very sharp and clean. I know ISO1600 is not going to come out well. With the 30D images don't seem as sharp and the noise is higher than I was led to believe from the reviews. The speed of the 30D is very very good though as this was my main complaint with the D30.

I would stick with Canon, get some decent lenses first and, if you still feel limited, get a second hand 20D or a 30D.

If you do landscapes, I'd make a full-frame sensor a priority. An affordable 24mm or 28mm prime with a full frame gives more pleasing results than even a very pricey 17mm or wider lens ona 1.6 crop.

However, it means you need longer lenses, which might cause issues for your motorsport photograpy!

Are the newer, cheaper full-frame sensor DSLR's out of budget?
