Gearbox Zizz

You can tell by the number of posts that my S2 is undergoing some tlc at present. The car has always had an infuriarting zizz from the gear lever at about 3000rpm. Gearbox otherwise excellent. Do you think taking the lever out and packing the whole assembly with grease will solve the problem? What other solutions are there? thanks

My S2 did that, and I came to the conclusion that it was the Z shaped gear lever resonating because of the flexibility from those bends. I think you would need to add some form of damping to the bends to get rid of the vibration.

might be obvious but... make sure all the grub screws and any collar, are all tight.

Different box but my v8S has just started making a funny noise in 5th gear must be the season ...

Mine was incredibly quiet untill I renewed the engine mounts a few weeks ago now its got "ZIZZ",perhaps its a resonance thing ????
Oddly it only does it with power on,on the overrun it stops.

To add to any confusion: Just had my enginemounts replaced with good one's. (not the tvr-c.p. things) and behold...on the way back from the london thunder it....started with the gearbox zzizrrrr at around 3000 rpm Holding on to the stick pushing it slightly to one side was the only remedy. I wonder what it is. I'll check the saddle thing that has been mentioned.
Hopefully the box isn't on it's way out. (It's about the only part that hasn't been done on my car :-)

Hi Han,
I used these. The 5cm-one. They are supposed to be a lot better then the QH mounts.

And...they are very cheap compared to what "some" supliers quote.
My tvrcp one's collapsed within 3 month despite a price of over 30 gbp each!!!

I have seen on a previous thread that the Zizz occurs, as it does on mine, when the plastic socket/bush thing which the lever pivots in becomes worn. This apparently a common problem on "S" cars, because its all to easy to drive along with your elbow on the centre consul, and your hand gently pushing the gear lever, exaggerating the wear and tear. Its only a Ford part, so it should not be too difficult to change?
