Hi Guys

I've been asked to write a short article for this months' company news letter; something vaguely IT related that will be of interest to home PC users. I've done a series of articles previously on securing your home PC: anti-virus, firewall etc...

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as I've drawn a blank.

Cheers
Phil

How about one on Scams. Should be able to get a bit of humour in as well, which is nice.

I met a guy in Ghana once who was working as a go between for a very high profile world known auditors (the name I should not give) He was an Australian business man who asked me, having just travelled in from Lagos to Accra Ghana, if it was safe for him to go Lagos, having never visited Lagos before, I gave him the usual friendly advice and then asked why did he want to visit. He told me this horrific story about him and the partners of the auditing company, had paid out over 300,000 Ausi dollars chasing a DHL courier box in and out of Heathrow, and other world destinations, having always supposedly just missed it as it arrived a day earlier and was returned NOT COLLECTED. It was said to have over US$90,000,000 from the defunct, Ministry of Defence budget. Well "419" jumped to mind and I was able to convince him he would be found flouting out to sea if he went to Lagos and investigated it any deeper. He gave me the file and I gave it to Chairman of group at the head offices in London. Next time I met up with the guy he had stayed in Ghana and told me they had closed the office and sacked the staff. Sorry for the long story, details are missed out to protect the HO reputation. But there is now a site set up bay anti scammers you can go to: www.419eater.com/ and see the action these bloggers take to take the "P" out of them.

Scams and internet shopping security are the best ones who most people have an interest in. Any one for phishing?

Some productivity options:
- Setting up Office Apps (modifying the normal template, special templates, adding toolbar buttons, etc.)
- The Start menu/Mac Dock: Clear the rubbish out and keep regularly used items there.
- Shortcuts/Aliases
- Worthwhile regular checks:- AV (update definitions, run a full scan), defrag, etc.
- Using & structuring mailboxes, using rules to filter email
- Useful freeware
You'd be amazed how many users haven't explored even the most basic functions for personalizing their machine, or the simplest productivity improvements.
When I set up a new Mac or install major apps (browser, Mail, Office), the first hour is spent adding the tweaks I've learned. There's several articles in there. If you struggle, keep an eye on your computer magazine - once a year they all normally run at least one article on the subject.

Judging from the experiences I have had recently of helping home users (I only usually do corporate stuff). How to best hide their downloaded pron. Although one suspects this sort of article wont go down well with management.

Seconded. Home users are almost always clueless in this area.

The one I always used to get asked was:

"Shall I turn my computer off, or leave it on standby / sleep?"

Was the most popular IT article I've ever written. type

It's always best to recommend the "OFF" solution. It's rare that they cause problems after that. You get the odd one where the cupholder gets broken, but for those people who do break the cupholder, they can always use it as a doorstop instead.

hehe

Making huge assumtions about your audience...

You could start with a basic 'power site' introduction. bbc, google, yahoo, you tube, live journal, etc.

Next I'd go for an article on the best shopping sites, focus on the delivery options, as this is pretty much all that matters between them.

Then, how about an article on the proper info sites. the cia factbook, wikipedia, google earth......

then the silly stuff..... http://www2.b3ta.com/heyhey16k/
