Caught on camera

Three members of the Women’s Institute who campaigned against cars speeding through their village received speeding fines when a camera was introduced. The ladies from the Herstmonceux Women’s Institute, in East Sussex, have each received a £60 ticket and three points on their licence.

I am sorry if this looks like Shadenfreuder syndrome but I cannot help get enjoyment from hypocrites who had no problem jumping on a bandwagon getting run over by it later.

Perhaps they wont be jumping to demonise the 'thoughtless' and 'dangerous' drivers who speed through their village any more and perhaps thing of the bigger picture.

But they are perfectly right jp1, speeding through villages is a real pain.......what they don't realise is that it is mainly locals that do it and in my village young mothers

The local copper, when harangued about getting a Speed Camera at the Neighbourhood Policing do, invariably responds with "but you won't like it". rofl

Speed Cameras catch locals. Because its locals who are generally there and know the roads so well the never even think about what the limit is...

Sorry. I'm sure its a PITA for them but.... rofl rofl rofl

We had some busybody on our housing estate trying to claim in the local rag that "evil speeders" were visiting our estate to speed and would shortly run over a kid or a pet. I couldn't help bur point out that the "evil speeders" weren't "them" they were "US"! Idiot.

I don't think this really tells us that people who speed are in the right, just that in a modern cosy car it's very easy to speed.

No, it also tells us that in a lot of cases - this isn't the first time by any means - the voices that demand speed cameras are hypocritical.

Perhaps they thought speeding meant more than 40 in a 30. At any rate, that's what I think it should mean.

What bullshit.

Speeding in 30mph limits is where speed can increase danger. After all - if the limit has been set properly - it should be a "busy" environment where pedestrians, pets and so on have to mix in with cars. 30mph - and often FAR LESS then 30mph is appropriate in these environments. Driving at 40mph in a 30 can be a GRAVE error of judgement. Yes - its quite possible that driving at 37mph may be doing no harm at all - BUT - I contend that this means the limit has been set incorrectly.

Sorry. I have no sympathy AT ALL for people caught speeding at 40mph in villages, housing estates and residential streets. Tough shit. They all deserve it.

I have total sympathy for drivers caught at 80mph on the motorway - or 90mph on a country A road with excellent visibility - or even 150mph on a deserted motorway at 4:30am on a summer's morning.

But not for the 40mph club who do that speed everywhere and want to get all hoity-toity about the rest of us.

P.S. I am an active road safety campaigner and observe for the IAM. I want deaths and injuries down. I just don't see how some campaigns actually help. Especially when some have been shown not to do so.

I think they thought that speeding was something that nasty, rat-running commuters, or white van drivers, or other sorts who are 'not from round here' did...

The 30 limit covers a huge range of situations. It's obviously appropriate sometimes, but not everywhere. Narrow roads especially with parked cars demand very low speeds but others are wide and clear along which 40 would not be discourteous or dangerous. I would like people to do no more than 30 in my road, I wouldn't be upset by people doing 40 but I do get pissed with those who do 50 or 60.

NIMBY brigade.. but those who claim they vever speed or want zero tolerance where they live.. do indeed drive at most unsafe speed most of the time. What ist sadder.. they do drive at the limit.. even when circumstances would dictate to the saner amongst us that safest speed may be below that lolly rolleyes

Ist all about COAST skills. Speed marginally above lolly? - ist just a convenient "fleece the majority" thing rolleyes

If they understood anything about road safety.. COAST.. observing in 30 mph zone .. they would not have been scammed anyway rolleyes

Have zero sympathy for this type.

Bear in mind that the WI is, it seems, rapidly becoming yet another Non Government Agency with strong political leanings and no need to answer to the public for their actions.

I wonder who it is that that allows these organisations to vacate their independent position. Likewise allows 'charities' such as Transport 2000 (for whom the WI seem to have become major supporters in many of their campaigns).

Why do we need a charity to be a mouthpiece for the Coach and Bus industry?

On that basis PH should be a charity for sports car drivers.

I usually trickle through my village these days. The anti speed campaigners WILL slow down whether they want to or not - especially over the dreadful speed humps which I take at no more than 5mph, frequently much less.
