A nice quote from Damon Hill about Schumi's mindset going into his last F1 race:

“He’s going to go into that last race thinking: ‘Now, how can I win this and Alonso not score anything?’

“That’s the way he’s going to approach it.

“Otherwise he’s not Michael Schumacher.”

Now if that isn't a veiled way of saying he thinks MS, or someone on behalf of MS, will crash into Alonso, I don't know what is

is it just me or was damon a little hot headed in 1994 and should have realised that MS had hit the wall, not gone for the gap at the first opportunity and waited to see what damage there was to the bennetton, it was hardly the last lap of the race.

and no disrespect to damon, but i would have carried on racing ala villeneuve.... rather than drive the car to destruction he accepted what teh mechanic said and conptinues to brood on it twelve years later!.....

IIRC I don't think he saw MS hit the wall, he might have thought he had just went wide and getting back up to speed. Little vid here - www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQC_LQI1Aiw

Difficult to really see.

As I recall, this is exactly right. Hill's first words when he saw the video replay of the "accident" were, "God, he was out!".

Hill didn't see Schu hit the wall and had no idea his car was crocked. He did what any racing driver would do - tried to seize the opportunity.

Villeneuve had a damaged sidepod, Hill had broken front suspension! He couldn't of carried on if he wanted to.

As for Brazil, I wouldn't expect any tactics of that sort. Sure Massa will try to hold up Alonso, but take him out?! No way would Massa agree to something like that.

Schumacher will want to just win and hope Alonso has a dnf. If it rains - nothing can be taken for granted.

i dont agree that any racing driver would have done what Hill did but i can see why he committed to the move. some drivers can caluculate data quicker than others, had he slowed down and not overtaken, he could have spent a lap on Scuhmachers tail and the benneton may have had to come in for a check?!? maybe it had a puncture?!?!? makes me wonder why F1 teams are not always on theradio actig as spotters like NASCAR?!?! maybe they are but i suspect not. I still think it was a rash move and at an inappropriate point on the circuit.

I agree with you - even accepting that he didn't know the Benetton was out of the race, he must have seen it was slow. With hindsight it's easy to say that if he'd bided his time, he'd have won, but in the heat of the moment I guess he did what he thought right.

It'll be interesting to read MS's memoirs in years to come, to see whether he thinks he drove into Damon, or whether he feels he was recovering from having smacked the wall and Damon was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The Michael Schumacher autobiography will be the greatest work of ficton since the bible IMHO!!!!

Which of course, his supporters will take as gospel (see what i did there!) and people with their eyes open wont even bother reading it, as we all know it will be lies and skewed accounts..

As as already been stated, Hill would not have been able to finish anyway - one of his top links on the left front wishbone was severly bent and broken. His race was over too.

And of course, Hill's move should have been completely feaible - as he probably assumed that Schumavcher would not deliberately drive into him. If anything, that was Hill's mistake - assuming Schumacher was sportsman and a gentleman.

I maybe wasn't clear - what I meant was that if Hill hadn't gone for the pass there and then, his suspension wouldn't have become broken and his race wouldn't have been over.

I'm not too sure. I would never discount anything where Schumacher is concerned!

And the further point I was making was that Hill made the pass assuming that another driver would do his best to avoid a coming together, rather than deliberately cause one.

That was Hill's mistake.

I remember the on board footage from Damon's car and although it showed Michael rejoining the track after his off it didn't show him hitting the wall. Aas far as Hill knew Michael had only run wide, and so the opportunity to try and pass presented itself and he took it, thinking that it may have been the only chance he would have got. He mentioned later after seeing the race footage that if he had known that Michael had actually hit the wall and damaged his car at the time then he would have waited. Basically, he didn't know at the time and had to take a split-second decision.

The irony is the people saying that Hill should have waited are presumably the same people who used to moan about Hill not going for the overtakes... rolleyes

Personally, I wouldn't take anyone's autobiography as gospel - almost by definition it will be skewed towards their own perception of events. But I wonder whether it's worse to read something and judge for yourself whether to believe it, or to not read it because 'it will all be lies'?
