Has anyone tried only sleeving half the exhaust perferations. By this I mean opened up the silencer and replaced or sleeved half the length of pipe rather than replacing the whole length. I feel that replacing it all and creating a straight through exhaust would be to noisy, I know that there is the cherry bomb route but just wondered if anyone had experimented with modifying the std exhaust.

I have.. I wished I hadn't.
I played around with the exhaust on a Chim 500 and took out the padding, but it then whistled at plus 3500rpm
I was about to have the perf pipes fully sleeeved, but the silencer box fell to pieces due to the excessive reverberation. Car off the road for 6 weeks until I could get a cherry bomb exhaust from ACT fitted. Sounds perfect now.
Moral of the story.... leave well alone, or buy a sports exhaust.

evil yes yes yes evil

I have had a 4 litre Chim with the perf pipe and wadding removed by Leven - sounded OK but whistled like a turbo

Same car I then had the sleeve put in by Austec - sounded great

Now 5 litre Griff with Offords cherry bomb mod (replaces the perforated pipe) and evil

thanks Martin; will have to try and hear one to appreciate the difference.

as an aside, leaving the wadding in if you sleeve the perforated pipe (IIRC) stops the 'turbo' effect.

Yes, but you need a silencer box and system to get the Offords conversion.

I'm not sure either, but I'll endorse the above "wot he saids"

Sounds bloody marvellous, but if you think sleeved is too loud, you may want to start walking. Ditto if you do say motorway commuting - the noise inside would get on your t*ts, but for hooning about on back roads etc the Cherrybombs can't be beat evil

As far as i am aware, a "straight through" exhaust conversion is when the box is cut open, wadding is removed, and the perforated pipes are cut out and replaced by solid pipes. the whole lot is welded back together.

The cherry bomb conversion is a similar process, but the perforated pipes are replaced by cherry bombs, which i believe do not have any perforations, but have small "echo chamber" thingies, and the wadding is still used.

In my opinion (and remember this is to personal taste), the straight through is a bit harsh, very loud, and can sometimes "whistle".

The cherry bomb produces a deeper "baritone" sound, no "tinny" noise, and plenty of bangs and crackles on over run if you want. It is not quite as loud as straight through, but definately loud enough.

I am happy with motorway runs, with roof off, and not be deafened by it. I spent almost 10 hours in the car recently, and didn't get bored of that noise.

If in doubt - have a listen to one.

Hope this helps, and isn't considered too too inaccurate by the cognescenti

Sorry David but your wrong or the job hasn't been done properly.

I have no "whistle" or "tinny" sound - but it is harsh.

I think tinny comes about from not repacking the wadding after welding in the hoover pipes. My cherries are exceedingly loud, maybe helped by s/s headers sans pre-cats. They were louder than a straight through measured on Sunday.

Everyone has different tolerances - cabin intrusion with roof on is considerable in mine, but I don't do long commutes so v happy with result.

This is all getting very vague......

I am very familiar with the common silencer modifications. Open up and replace perforated tubes with plain (not 'solid') tubes. This is what I believe Offords did for me along with lots of others before and after me. Removing wadding in addition can cause a metallic 'tinny' sound not preferred by all. Nobody mentioned fitting anything called "cherry bombs" at the time, I don't think they were an option. And I still don't know WTF they are! (if anything?).
