My XJ8 gearbox makes a grating? noise when accelerating in low gears when cold - as the the car warms up the noise gradually goes away - despite this noise which I assume is coming from the gearbox, the car drives well and gear changes are smooth and seem to occour at the right times. The cat has covered just under 80,000m. I have been told it could be a brake band slipping but I know nothing about auto boxes other than any faults are likely to be expensive!!
Should I just drive the car until something fails are would the recommendation be to get it fixed without delay?

Without driving the car it could be 100 different things... however what I would say is that I think you should change the oil in the gearbox.

Yes, it is fill for life but an oil change will certainly extend the life of the transmission. Very good insurance compared to the cost of a rebuild.

The oil is Esso LT 71141.

Thanks for that - have you any thoughts on using an additive when refilling the box?

Simple answer - don't use any additives of any sort.

At last I have had the gearbox fluid replaced and all the noises coming from the box when cold have gone!! Car drives like a different vehicle - simply amazing.
Many thanks for the advice.
