I've got a rackmount DL380 G2 here, quite good spec that was donated to a charity. Unfortunatley the noise level when running is comparable to concorde taking off so I had to give them something else and got stuck with this myself. Plan is to sell it and give the proceeds to the charity but the only problem is that they seem to go for buttons on ebay, is these somewhere else where these things make better money?

Can't help with the selling bit but....

Does it turn the fans down once it's booted into the o/s? If not, then put the HP support pack software on it and it'll throttle the fans back once it's loaded the management driver.

Yes it only sounds like concorde after the HP health driver has loaded, before then it sounds like two concores taking off simultaneousley and crashing into each other in the middle of the runway!

What's the internal temperature running at? If it's not too high/it's not getting mounted in a full rack of other DL380s, you could probably switch the 12v input to the fan for a 5v one from the nearest Molex connector/whatever. It wouldn't be the first time that's been "the official" quiet version of a server.

If more than one fan isn't reporting the right RPM then most HP servers will shut down.

yes I found that to be the case, theres a certain core group of fans which can't be removed or the thing won't boot. Plus IIRC they've got non-standard connectors, and they're an unusual size. [cynical]Presumably so that HP can charge about £20 a pop for them, just one of the ways to make it more attractive to keep buying new ones every 3 years.[/cynical]

Think I'l end up breaking this thing anyway, the cpu's go for 30-40 each, plus all the disks, and whatever else people will buy! Damn shame but most of our clients are too small to have dedicated rooms for noisy bitches like these.
