another mis firing problem

i am getting a hesistation/cutout on low speed driving which is driving me round the bend

it went away for a while and has now come back
when driving at 60 70 it seems okay but there is a slight hesitatation an 3900 rpm when you accelerate

i don't know wether it is fuel or electrical

any ideas

got new TP
distributor replaced a year ago
magnecor leads
spark plugs replaced a year ago
coil replaced
cleaned earth points
fuels pump just over a year old

speaking of spark plugs,
which ones should I buy for the S1?
Should I also change the leads?

Alan if you want to try the leads and plugs off mine drop me a mail and we'll arrange something.

Only thing I could suggest otherwise is think about the weather, it was doing it early in the year, cleared up through the summer (very dry summer), now it's returned and so have the damp conditions.

further update just went for drive with the new TP off and it was better with just a slight hesitation ,is this hesistation normal with the TP removed ???

I had the same problem, which gradually grew worse. This turned out to be a leaking brake booster: The engine sucks in air through the servo, leaning out the mixture. The brake booster itself works fine, but the brake pedal becomes 'hard' a few seconds after stopping the engine. This indicates a leak. This might be worth a try, as you've already tried the more obvious causes.

I had similar problems a while back which came and went with dry / damp weather - turned out to be a faulty air flow meter - try unplugging them and running but only unplug one at a time.

Ronald, I think you have jut solved a problem I've had for mths on a modded Golf GTi (My sons).Never thought of that scenario,been blaming MAF's and overcamming at low revs, Thanks

Good to hear it is of use to you Ken. It's not the most obvious thing to look for, I spent ages myself to find out what was wrong.
