Just had a 7 week fight with the DVLA over the 3Rs VIN not matching the VIN on the Reg Doc. Basically one of the characters - (the 10th one in from the left)on the document says the number 1". The Noble chassis plate and chassis stamp says the letter "I". Thought at first it was a keying error somewhere down the line but it turns out a tad more interesting. Read on and weep like me, if your motor was built in the month of September.
DVLA complies with a set ISO standard for recording VINs. This standard excludes the letters "I,O and Q" and their database software was set up not to accept these letters as part of the recorded VIN. So they will substitute these letters for the numbers "1,0 and 0" respectively without alerting the new owner when issuing a new Reg Doc. Meanwhile small vehicle manufacturers who decide not to adhere to the guidelines are still issuing VINs with "I,O and Q". Noble are one of these, as the letter "I" is the 10th character standard for the month of September (statement from the factory).
Where does this leave us owners whos cars have been built in September ? it means your chassis number and chassis plate doesn't match the VIN in your Reg Doc, and its all above board. If your lucky your service book,tracker docs,service receipts etc etc will all match with either the car or the Reg Doc. If not some will match the car some will match the V5. "Kin unbelievable".
